I have been listening to a lot of Chopin's Nocturnes. I have to feel the pieces, see the colors and the moods. When composing or writing melody lines does it make you feel something? Or is it a carbon copy of the next guy's piece? Or is it something like you have already done? Have you evolved creatively?
There is nothing wrong per se with doing what you know. However, thinking that you will grow and mature from doing the same thing in the same way will for sure not allow you to expand. You have not taken a risk. If all you have done is dive into large puddles of mud for the sake of being amongst your environment how would you then decipher that you have a spring of water right behind you that is clear blue and effervescent?
It cannot be taught. It can only be learned through experience and facing the moments.
